Vehicle1969 Ford Mustang Mach 1
This is my first EV project, converting my beat down Mustang into an EV (since it'll never be a show car in the hardcore classic car circles) while at the same time attempting to do a conversion of an average sized car for as low a cost as possible, with most of the parts being acquired from Ebay and some of the other stuff being homemade.
MotorAdvanced DC 203-06-4002 Series Wound DC
This motor appears to be a last generation ADC motor in the 8" class, with an operating voltage from 48-80v, with a splined shaft instead of keyed.
DrivetrainC4 transmission with direct drive coupling, no torque converter, reverse manual valve body for manual shifting, higher capacity aluminum oil pan with heat dissipater fins for cooling (no radiator yet, maybe if necessary).
ControllerCurtis 1209B-6402
This is a salvaged 48-72v, 400 amp controller that was picked up off of Ebay for $250.
Batteries12, 6.00 Volt, Lead-Acid, Flooded
I plan on acquiring some Sam's Club golf cart battery specials to help keep the costs down.
System Voltage72 Volts
Charger Homemade
Right now the battery charger is a variac based charger that will eventually have some circuitry built for it to control the charging times on the low end, and if I'm lucky, charge currents as well...
HeaterCar painted black and MS summer sun
DC/DC Converter Homebuilt
Another homebuilt device using a simple 24-12v reducer built around a 7815 voltage regulator and some power transistor/heat sink current multipliers, it worked before in an old project, lets see if it works again...
Instrumentation1000 amp ammeter, voltmeter, state of charge meter
Top SpeedAt the voltage and weight, I would hope to be able to hit 60 mph on level road.
AccelerationHopefully enough to keep me from getting run over by renegade truckers and SUV soccer moms.
RangeHopefully at least 30 miles, with the generator, hopefully much more...
EV Miles
Start:150,000 Miles (241,350 Kilometers)
Current:150,000 Miles (241,350 Kilometers)
Total:0 Miles (0 Kilometers)
Seating Capacity2 adults, the rear seat was removed for battery racks.
Curb Weight0
Hopefully with the batteries and the extra angle iron put in this car, it won't weigh more than it did with the V8.
Tires14" cheapos
Conversion Timebeen 2 years, putting an hour or so here and there, trying different ideas, still moving along but will be in the home stretch soon.
Conversion CostCost...Parts that will be in the car, less than $5k, parts lying in storage awaiting a new lease in life after being tried and rejected, more.
Additional FeaturesWill have a homemade diesel generator installed that will run on veggie diesel to help further cut the costs of running this car
Car started as a restoration project as well as conversion so in actuality more money will be going into the car for body parts as well. This attempt at building a low cost EV helps me to see where I can save money when it comes to parts, how to assemble groups of parts for the lowest cost and looking for alternatives when outside work for parts (motor/trans adapter) ends up costing an arm and a leg when it comes time to try on another conversion. While this will get the EV on the road faster, my goal is installing a homemade motor controller that I've been working on in the car, as well as making other mods as money and ideas come along. Check out the Po' Man's EV at WebPage for a more detailed walk through of the project.
